A few weeks ago I wrote a post about….well, me. OK and about how I’m so beautiful and don”t hate me because of it la de da…la de da…
An then today I opened up an email from a media event I attended, and there was a picture of this dumpy lumpy version of myself…which is so strange, because I was at that event..and I was SOO positive I was the girl who looked cute in her JoeFresh tunic, leggings and teal ballet flats…chatting and giggling with these really cute girls…so wtf?
Who’s the dumpy broad who replaced her neck with a bowling ball?
OK, wait…it’s still me…take a breathe..think back to that night…what was really going on…
Let’s see… I spent an hour getting ready {which is 45 minutes linger than normal} I shaved and plucked and moisturized. I drank plenty of water and felt bright and fresh and well, pretty…again!
So where did that picture come from, and more importantly what do I do now? I can’t un-see THAT image of myself {just like I can’t un-see my neighbours having sex, in CLOWN costumes, my fourth degree tear during pregnancy or the calorie count of a Tim Hortons Iced cappuccino}….gotta find a way to use this image for good instead of an excuse for a food festival on my couch {ProTip: dark couches hide all sorts of grease and chocolate stains}
I can’t face another Oreo Intervention.
And really, if you need anything at all solved, you go social…in this case, I asked twitter & facebook this question:
“What’s more likely to motivate you: seeing a pic of you at your heaviest or you at your goal weight? Am decided which pic to put on my fridge.”
Here are some of the replies….you people kill me with your kindness and generosity and wealth of knowledge….So screw the pics, i’m printing the replies out instead:
“Goal weight. It’s positive rather than negative reinforcement. You’re more likely to succeed if you minimize self-loathing.” @Schmutzie
“Probably one of both. That’s a really good idea! I just think it would be a better motivator. A pic of EITHER goal/heaviest weight might be discouraging. Both would be great ;o) @CallMeHalo
“always focus on desired state – what you want, not what you want to get away from. That way your head is right.” @Tim_modenusUK
“goal weight is probably a much more positive motivator. tho i have to say pics of me from last weekend are pretty motivating” @marandacarvell
“I wouldn’t put either. I’d rather a list of what I’d accomplished living a healthier lifestyle, ie can run 25 minutes, etc” @justleigh73
“Goal. Happiness breeds success, which breeds happiness, which…you know” Jen, facebook
“Just another thought…how about putting up pictures of how you want to FEEL? a picture that shows STRENGTH, or ENERGY for example…
)” @Fit_vs_Fiction
“Pic with you at your goal weight – It’s a more positive outlook on how you’ll achieve whatever little goal you have bc you see how healthy and happy you look.” Bonnie, facebook
“I say goal weight – you need to let go of the old and focus on the new.”
“Personally I like the fit pic since you know you were once like that, it is a realistic goal, and looking at it makes me feel good, unlike my chub pics that embarrass me. (photos of when you are prepubescent don’t count” Cindy, facebook
Wow! And thank you. Truly.
I loved the idea of picking a picture of how I want to feel….but decided for it to really resonant, it still had to be of ME….these are not me at my thinnest (I used to weigh 80- pounds…when I was nine…) but I clearly remember both these moments and how healthy and fit and energetic I felt….So, I’m asking you: What would motivate YOU??

Both gorgeous. You have such a classic beauty!
June 5, 2012
wow, thanks Nat! That’s actually the EXACT phrase I would use to describe you, pretty lady!!
June 5, 2012
I like both also..but think I’m partial to the one at the beach with the huge smile!
)
It’s funny, but the picture of myself that makes me feel the happiest is one that was taken when I was visiting my big brother at camp. I was about 4, wearing a blue dance and twirling. life was so uncomplicated and I was so confident…if I had to choose a picture to motivate me to make healthy decisions..I think I’d choose that one. (Is it sad that I “peaked” at 4 years old??)
June 5, 2012
I remember that carefree feeling too Marci….I’m not sure if this is a mid-life thingy I’m going through, but honestly, these days, that’s mainly how I feel now…with just a few hiccups of insecurity to keep me in check
June 5, 2012
You look gorgeous as you. If you’re putting up any picture, put up the one of you jogging in Today’s Parent Magazine. Life changes, shit happens. You’re still brilliant, opinionated, quirky you, no matter what. Self-L (not self loathing, self love).
June 5, 2012
you totally got me with the Self-L – my brain just automatically went to loathing..thanks for the correction!!
June 5, 2012
You saw your neighbours having clown sex? How?! (And by how, not positions and such, but how did you happen to see them…)
June 5, 2012
HAHAHA!! I was waiting to see who would ask about THAT…so glad it was you…well, OK, it was new years eve (which stil does not explain the costumes, k?) and I accidentally stumbled into my neighbours apartment instead of my own…and um, there they were..in the hall…red noses and all…yep
June 5, 2012
I was trying to figure out if one of the pictures was supposed to be the before picture, because you are so beautiful in both of them. Seriously.
June 5, 2012
wow, that was the fastest comment I ever “approved” Thanks!! These were both taken around 7 years ago…I chose them because like I said I felt great and healthy, but also because seven years in reverse dog years is like yesterday…so I thought it would be great motivator that it wasn’t all that long ago I felt that way
June 5, 2012
Your beautiful ether way… Personally though I would consider using the healthier picture as a motivator … Psychologically speaking you will benifit from moving toward a positive image rather than from a negative one…. And btw you looked amazing in that healthier picture of you !!!
June 5, 2012
In all honesty? Put a collage on your fridge. Put the two pretty pictures from above, the Today’s Parent one of you jogging (as Mara suggested), your two beautiful boys, your handsome husband, and a couple of motivational quotes that’ll keep you going in the hardest of times. (I love “You’re only one workout away from a good mood”). A good motivator is to not only to think that you’re doing it for yourself, but you’re also doing it for the people who love you.
June 5, 2012
I love the beach photo – you really look so happy!
I have actually hung a pair of jeans that I want to get on the door of my closet as inspiration, but I do like the fridge idea a lot!
June 5, 2012
I think you should tack this conversation thread up alongside an image of something you’ll do to commemorate reaching your goal—beach trip, mountain hike, shopping spree.
Whatever you decide, I really think that you are on the right track.
June 5, 2012
Marci – I think you’re an amazing woman and you look AWESOME in both of those photos. I’m not the best person to ask about motivation because so far this year (and yes I know it’s June) I’ve stuck to healthy eating and Week 1 of C25K for a total of…. 1 week. But whenever you post about how great you feel I feel a little motivated too… keep it up because you’re not just motivating yourself you’re spreading that all over the internets
June 5, 2012
Put a positive pic up of yourself. You’ll gravitate to that. Mara’s idea of the one of you running is great. Shows how you’re already actively changing your life in a positive way.
Keep at it babe!
June 5, 2012
I really LOVE some of the replies people put! Being focused on the positive aspects of healthy living is a great one (the fact you ran 5 k…awesome!). beautiful pics:)
June 5, 2012
I like those pictures because it evokes how you felt at that time.
June 5, 2012
Beach – I like that one because there’s motion and activity and joy.
But actually, I’m more of a nix all that and put up instead all the schedules for drop in fitness activities which interest you, in all the rec centers and gyms around you.
Plus a master calendar for the classes you have already registered for & therefore will attend no matter what (If you break a leg, you do the class sitting down & just waving your arms around)
The drop-in schedules are for any time you aimlessly wander into the kitchen feeling crappy and thinking ‘maybe I should eat something….’. You read the schedule and say instead ‘No, I don’t need to eat. I just need to go to class!’
June 5, 2012
I Love them both. I think it is because I truly believe you to be a wonderful person and in my mind it wouldn’t matter if you were 150 or 350, so in both you look stunning.
